In addition to this orientation, microblogging tools may:

make it easier to post to your blog very quickly,

provide formats for common kinds of entries (videos, pictures, quotations, etc),

allow access to post from and read content on mobile devices, including cell phones

The most popular microblogging service that is still obviously descended from traditional blogging tools is Tumblr, which downsized the traditional blog in favor of quick, easy entry and simple display formats intended for many small pieces of data.

Twitter is perhaps the ultimate distillation of microblogging, being a tool that promotes open conversations with posts that are limited to 140 characters or less (the limit imposed by many cell phone systems for text message length). In essence a cross between blogging and Instant Messenger, Twitter has become a technological phenomenon that has attracted millions of dedicated users– and received a lot of popular press– but that can also be very hard to understand until you find the right conversations for your tastes (in this way it’s similar to the world of blogs, but with even more informality, sometimes making the right conversations even harder to find). Twitter very much has become a very prominent part of our culture. However, it is not to say that opinion on Twitter doesn’t vary. Read these opposing perspectives on Twitter:

“A Eulogy for Twitter” by Adrianne Lafrance and Robinson Meyer

“Twitter is not Dying” by Will Oremus

In my opinion, the fact that two prominent magazines argue about the state of Twitter only reinforces the fact of just how big of a role Twitter plays in our lives (whether we realize it on not).

The term liveblogging refers to the idea of capturing more aspects of one’s life online than traditional blogs do. This might seem crazy to those who feel regular blogs are already making too much publicity, but for many the time it takes to post to a traditional blog and the expectation of composing entries gets in the way of freeform expression. Services like Tumblr helped fill this gap (as do other tools, as you will soon see) and the term ‘liveblogging’ came into vogue. You can see an example of what liveblogging is on 24liveblog site.

Since then, the term has evolved a bit to include another method of capturing your online presence by aggregating the various places that you share content. Later on will learn how to bookmark stream in Diigo, bring and curate your resources using Wakelet and Feedly and share them with anyone on the Internet.

This week we will learn about smaller and quicker derivations of the traditional idea of blogging.
