Managing your Diigo bookmarks
This short tutorial from David Knapp provides an overview of Diigo bookmarking service. Topics covered: managing your account, bookmarking, tagging, sharing.
Sign-up with Diigo and Install Toolbar
Use the Diigo Registration and Toolbar Installation module to join the Diigo service and, if you are using Firefox or Chrome, install the toolbar. You can also go directly to https://www.diigo.com/tools/diigolet and install the Diigolet (which is a widget that lives in your bookmarks’ toolbar and allows you perform a number of functions just like Diigo toolbar right from your browser:
Note:
- You are not required to fill in any of the optional profile information!
- I encourage you to skip the “Invite Friends” feature
You can come back to either of the above later!
During the signup process, you will have to confirm using a link you will receive in your email… when you follow that link you will go to the screen to install the toolbar! If there is a problem, you can always go to the Diigo Toolbar page and install it at any time.
If you are using Internet Explorer, you can either:
-
- try out the IE Toolbar, or
- use the Diigolet bookmarklet (if you do, be sure to use the View > Toolbar > Links menu item and resize the links toolbar so you have easy access to the Diigolet shortcut!)
Social Bookmarking Browsing
A key strength of social bookmarking is the ability to take advantage of the “network effects” that come from the connection of your bookmarks and tags to other bookmarks, tags and people in the system.
Tag Browsing
When you are viewing your bookmarks in Diigo you can click on any tag to see all of your bookmarks using that tag (example: my bookmarks tagged ‘design’). This is great for you personally. But the social dimension is even more powerful: when viewing a list of your bookmarks by tag, click the popular link above the bookmark list to see the most popular links everyone has tagged with that tag: popular bookmarks tagged ‘design’. Choosing the recent tab shows you all the bookmarks tagged ‘design’, newest first. Of course, at any time you can use the save link for a particular bookmark to save it to your own bookmarks.
People Browsing
Another option for discovery is to look at bookmarks compiled by a particular person. Usually, you will do this by browsing by tag, as outlined above, and then either:
- in the popular view, clicking one of the usernames associated with a bookmark, which will take you to that particular user’s bookmarks sharing that tag. For instance, I clicked on the name associated with a bookmark from the popular links tagged ‘design’ and ended up viewing Jean Howard’s Public Library
- in recent view, click a tag associated with a bookmark and you will see all of that person’s bookmarks using that tag, as in Martha King’s Library tagged ‘design.’
