Today’s task was the emergency button day. We don’t have emergency buttons in the US (the book is from England) but we do have fire alarms. To complete this task I went to the University campus where I work. (well, I had a specific reason: I needed to pick up a different computer from my office and the reason I went today is that there were not many unmasked people). So, I pulled a fire alarm. I know it is bad but practice makes it perfect… I got outside first and then watched other people trail in. There were 10 in total. The book gave you a variety of topics that are emergent:
Third-world debt, Global Warming, Poverty in the Ghetto, Ozone Layer, Nuclear Proliferation, Species Extinction. I was deciding between Nuclear Proliferation and Global Warming and settled on Global Warming which I thought would be a better subject of banter while outside with strangers. So, we gathered in a circle as this is what humans do in dire communal situations and I decided to start a conversation which was easy as we just had a huge snowstorm. So I went, “How about that Global Warming?” To my surprise, people answered. We had a whole conversation about unpredictable weather patterns and how much everyone loved the snow but not the 35mi per hour winds. It continued until the fire truck arrived and everyone was ushered back in. Although I am pretty much sure I did an illegal thing the conversation was great so I consider this task accomplished.
