Today’s task was to “defy superstition.” The book provided all superstitious things to defy. Well, a lot of them. So, I chose:
1. Walk under a ladder. This one was easy to do as the parks we go to either have children’s playgrounds or exercise structures. So, I specifically chose the one path with ladders to go under. Opee however did not want to and I had to drag him to walk under. Maybe he is more superstitious than me? Either way, it was done! Let’s see if the lightning drops on my head as this is what I assume might happen.
2. Open your umbrella inside. This one demanded an effort and a trip to the store to purchase one as I did not have one (I gave mine to a homeless guy who was begging on the street under the rain). Besides, when I moved here there was a saying that true Portlanders don’t care about umbrellas but just wear raincoats. Strange as there is so much rain here and not having an umbrella makes your pants soaking wet. So, as I moved here I purchased the best rain gear (including pants). Thank you REI for the discount on my membership card! Anyhow, there were so many patterns available that they made my eyes hurt. I settled on basic black as that is mostly what I wear as of late. Not because I am goth but because it is slimming. Once it was done I opened it in my comfy chair (although I did have to figure out how. This one had a button to automatically open on its handle. I assume to expect bad things to happen although I don’t know which ones.
3. Put keys on the table. Never heard of this one and it is disheartening as I always do. However, I have a special plate for them which in theory separates them from the table. So today they will leave outside the plate. I assume it has something to do with money. Bummer. But on a good note, I defied it (hopefully).
4. Whistle inside the house. I know this one. And it definitely has to do with money according to Russian superstition. I regretted it as I possibly have a double whammy on the mone subject. (see umbrella superstition). But I am already broke as I had to fix my tires and the breaks at Les Schwab yesterday… It can’t affect me anymore as I don’t have the extra money.
5. Step on the crack on a sidewalk. Well, I know this one as well from Russian superstitions. However, in Soviet Russia, it meant you will kill Lening. Seeing how he is already dead and has been for a while I did not worry about it.
That’s about it. Task completed. Wish me luck as it seems I will need it.
