The main goal of this lesson is to create a short video.
Learning Objectives:
• Identify tools and equipment involved in video production.
• Explain the process of creating a video.
• Create a storyboard for a video.
• Produce a short movie.
Introduction: it is all about the process!
Creating movies is all about the process. There are five main stages in the movie-making process. They are…
- Development
- Pre-production
- Production
- Post-production
- Distribution
Development involves coming up with ideas, which then put into a script. It is then broken down into a step outline, which breaks the story down into one-paragraph scenes. Then, in the pre-production stage, the movie is storyboarded and film crew hired. Storyboarding is an important process, which allows filmmakers visualize the entire movie before they start production. In a nutshell, they are a sort of a comic book style illustration of the entire movie. They help to organize your story, create a visual roadmap and a list of content, and keep you stay focused. Here is an example of a storyboard for a video explaining the process of storyboarding (click on the image to enlarge):

In the next stage—production— the movie is actually created and shot. More crew is usually recruited such as the property master, script supervisor, assistant directors, stills photographer, picture editor, and sound editors. These are just the most common roles in filmmaking. Followed by post-production, the film is assembled by the film editor. This is the stage where edit decisions are made, title and list of the cast put together, soundtrack added and edited to match appropriate scenes. This stage is followed by a movie preview and additional edits if necessary. The concluding stage is distribution, where a movie is released for audience and movie rights, are established.
In this lesson, you will go through each stage and at the end showcase your movie to your peers for evaluation.
