Intro to Digital Literacy Assignments

Outlining your remake (10 pts):

  1. Watch “Embracing the Remix” TedTalk from Kirby Furguson about the nature of stealing and transforming.
  2. Think of a popular or your favorite movie.
  3. Put together an outline of how would you re-make/change a trailer for a popular flick or your favorite movie. You have a number of options:
  • Adding your own perspective to the original ideas (for example, adding a new segment to the beginning or end of the trailer)
  • Creating a satire on the original trailer (for example, through changing the soundtrack of the trailer)
  • Creating a completely new trailer from scratch.

Reflection (25 pts):

After reading  “Copyright Law on the Internet Is a Total Train Wreck Right Now” and watching TED Talk by Kirby Ferguson

make a post on a community Discussion Board answering the following questions (keep in mind the rubric according to which your post will be evaluated  https://introtodigitalliteracy.wordpress.com/reflection-rubric/):

  1. Do you agree/disagree with the authors’ perspectives on the state of the copyright right now? Why?
  2. When you share someone else’s image or video on Facebook or Pinterest, do you attribute the work?
  3. Do you care (or not) if someone else uses your work and why.
  4. What are the ways to protect yourself from the theft of your work?

Reply to one other student’s post explaining why you agree or disagree with his/her perspective.

Reflect on your learning (10 pts):

Make a post on class blog describing your experience working through learning materials in this lesson. Use following questions as a guide: What was the most challenging part to comprehend?  What was the easiest part? What was the most interesting part? Will you continue exploring concepts of remixing and copyright on your own in the future (for example, for your school work)?

Comment on at least one other student’s reflection.
